Dental implants are known for their durability, bone stimulation benefits and esthetic appeal, but what is the recovery process like after they have been placed? Whether you have already scheduled a dental implant appointment or you simply want to learn more about this popular treatment option, here are a few things you can expect after you receive dental implants.

1. Minor Discomfort

As with all other surgery types, dental implant surgery comes with some post-surgical discomfort. In most cases, patients can manage post-surgery pain by regularly taking their prescribed pain medication. For best results, it is recommended that you take your first dosage of pain medicine before your anesthetic has completely worn off. If you are having trouble managing your pain despite taking your pain medication as prescribed, please call our office.

2. Swelling

Swelling is the body’s normal response to surgery and will likely continue up to a week after your procedure. Placing a cold pack in a towel and applying it to your cheek can help keep swelling under control and can have pain-reducing benefits as well.

3. Diet

After your surgery, limit your food intake to soft or pureed foods (such as yogurt, soup, puddings, etc.) Avoid hot foods or those that require excessive chewing. Make sure you get adequate nutrition and don’t skip meals while you are healing.

4. Oral Hygiene

Your mouth will be tender post-surgery, but it is still important to maintain good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth daily, while being careful to avoid your surgical wounds. You should also rinse your mouth with a gentle solution of warm salt water at least twice each day.
